The Protestant Reformation began in 1517 when a Roman Catholic priest, Martin Luther, challenged some of the teachings of the church. It is not an exaggeration to suggest that the Reformation changed the world, but Luther didn’t want to start a new church. He wanted to make changes in Catholicism, the faith in which he had been ordained. But his suggestions were rejected and he was branded a heretic.
